I’ve read a lot of books lately that have included fae: Throne of Glass sequel, Lord of Shadows (The Dark Artifices series) and now The Falconer.

The Falconer was the worst of the bunch. I didn’t dislike it, but I certainly didn’t love it.

Unfortunately, when I put the book down, I felt annoyed. Even though I know it’s a trilogy, I expected there to be some kind of resolution in part of the story line before I would have to move on to the next book – much like the Throne of Glass series.

That’s not the case and The Falconer ends with a cliffhanger that seems to stop right in the middle of an important scene.

I was excited when I first started the book. There were some good elemnents. I noticed the steampunk themes and hoped there would be a bit more exploration into that, but instead there were just a few mentions of some devices used in the world. And Aileana is supposed to be an inventor, but the tools aren’t on display very often.

The writing was good, and I did enjoy how May put the story together. But it’s not a good thing when you put down a book and say out loud, “Well, that was annoying.” That was me.

Not sure I will continue with the series. I’ll put the rest of it in a ‘maybe’ pile.

Book review: Game 7: Deadball

As a baseball fan, I'm pretty much a sucker for anything to do with my favorite sport. But at the same time, I'm also very critical. Game 7: Deadball by Allen Schatz is a mystery thriller with the 2008 World Series as a backdrop. For the record, I was at that World Series, so it was interesting to see how certain things would be incorporated into an event I attended. The first thing I noticed was how well the book was written. As an indie author, Schatz's writing is very polished. It was a refreshing start because it meant there would be no cringing throughout the book from poor grammar or something else that a good editor could have helped. It allowed me to just enjoy the book, which I did. Marshall Connors, a Major League Baseball umpire, is at the center of the book. Almost there - just one more thing to do

George R.R. Martin writes long. There's nothing wrong with that, especially when it works well in his fantasy novels. My only issue is that I am currently reading the fourth book and want to finish it before I start anything new. I think I don't have much more to go. I got the book in a four-pack bundle for my ereader, so apparently I only have a 100 or so more pages to go before I am done. One of the toughest things about ereaders is actually gauging how much of a book is left. While the actual page count is there, sometimes there are extra pages at the end of books that aren't part of the story. Can't just flip to the back on this one. However, once I am done, which will hopefully be in the next day or so, the first eBook I plan to read is “ The Beat” A Baseball Short Story .” We'll start off easy – just 8,840 words. That should take me less time than it's taken to read “ A Feast for Crows .” I've scoured Smashwords to find ...
